The Timeline of Recovery: Detox, Inpatient, Outpatient and Extended Treatment

It is important to understand that recovery from drug or alcohol addiction is a life-long process. There simply is no cure for alcohol and/or drug addiction. Recovery means constant acknowledgement of the addiction as well as support for the addict.sober-companion-dr-sober-drugs

Treatment wise however, there are certain timelines that are typically followed. The first step in the process is detoxification or detox. This step involves ridding the body of the addictive substance. A physician or medically supervised staff is typically present during the detox period as the addict can become very ill. This process can last for more than a week in severe cases. The process must be done slowly to allow the body to adjust to the lack of substance. Many alcoholics and addicts who have used these substances for many years require constant medical attention as withdrawing these substances can have a detrimental affect on their bodies.

Once the detox phase has been completed, the treatment process for the addiction begins Sober Companion. Most inpatient rehabilitation treatment programs are designed to last for twenty-eight days. This is, however, dependent on the individual as well as the level of addiction. Some facilities offer treatment programs that can last up to one year. Outpatient Drug Rehab programs also vary in their time lengths, depending on the individual.

Once the treatment phase is completed, extended treatment begins. This phase can last for the entire life of the patient as again, drug and alcohol addictions have no cure. The constant need for support and therapy may very well be a life-long process. Most patients however, once the detox and treatment phases have proven successful, will thrive with occasional meetings and therapy sessions. Group therapy has proven to be very beneficial for many recovering addicts and family counseling is another option that can provide long-term results for living drug and alcohol free.
